چکیده
The pervasive nature of computing and communications is bringing about a paradigm shift in the way these technologies are being used. The shift is in the direction of nomadic computing and communications. Nomadicity refers to the system support needed to provide a rich set of computing and communication capabilities and services to the nomad as he or she moves from place to place in a transparent, integrated and convenient form. This new paradigm is already manifesting itself as users travel to many different locations with laptops, PDA’s, cellular telephones, pagers, etc. In this paper we discuss a vision of nomadicity as well as open issues, architecture and design concerns that must be addressed as we bring about the system support necessary for nomadicity.

A Communication Broker for Nomadic Computing Systems
This paper presents the Esperanto Broker, a communication platform for nomadic computing applications. By using this broker, developers can model application components as a set of objects that are distributed over wireless devices and interact via remote method invocations. The Esperanto Broker is able to guarantee remote object interactions despite device movements and/or disconnections. We d...
متن کاملMobile Agent Architecture for Nomadic Computing
Our goal is to de ne a communication architecture for nomadic applications. We notice that the mobile agent paradigm is particularly suitable for nomadic applications. Although many mobile agent systems are being proposed, few of them raise the problem of the interface between applications and mobile agents. We propose to use the MAP (Mobile Assistant Programming) architecture and add a middlew...
متن کاملMobility Management and Communication Support for Nomadic Applications
There is an increasing demand for realizing communication services for nomadic environments, capable to provide applications with mobility management facilities and application-aware adaptation support. This paper proposes a novel mobility management and communication architecture specifically suited for nomadic environments, offering communication facilities and adaptation support by means of ...
متن کاملMaking infrastructure visible for nomadic work
In this study we revisit Weiser’s (1991) [5] vision of seamlessly integrated computing. We focus on nomadic workers who rely extensively on mobile technologies to conduct work. Using Star and Ruhleder’s (1996) [10] properties of infrastructure, we discuss how nonroutine users of infrastructure face particular challenges. We conducted an ethnographic investigation of nomadic workers in a large d...
متن کاملMIKADO Global Computing Project IST-2001-32222 Mobile Calculi Based on Domains Flat Net Architectures for Global Computing Systems: Types and Behaviour
This paper aims at collecting some of the foundational work on languages for global computing systems relying on a flat net architecture. The main case-study languages dealt through the paper are Dπ, lsdπ and μKLAIM, but also other two languages (namely Amadio’s π1`-calculus and Sewell’s NOMADIC PICT) are also analysed. We compare their language design issues, their type theories and their beha...
